Jimbo Fisher on early signing period: ‘I think we’ve made a mistake’

Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher is not a fan of the early signing period in college football — at least not the way it is now.

Fisher met with reporters on Thursday and explained why he’d rather see it happen in the summer.

“It is a whirlwind, there’s no doubt,” Fisher said. “I’m not for the early signing period and where it’s at. I think it needs to be at the end of summer. It does make it tough on coaches, and in our state, you’ve got kids playing for a state championship and having a signing day that week.

“That’s a huge distraction,” Fisher added. “And to me, it’s not fair to those kids who are going through that experience, and it’s not fair to the high school coaches involved. I think it’s a bad scenario. Recruiting is one thing, but having a signing day is another.

“I think we’ve made a mistake with that in college football.”

Texas A&M’s 2018 class is currently ranked ninth in the SEC and 23rd nationally, according to the 247Sports Composite Team Rankings.

The Aggies had a total of 10 early signees.
