This past weekend, Rutgers became the first Power 5 school to fire a college head coach during the 2019 season, giving an early start to the coaching carousel rumor mill. On Sunday, multiple reports mentioned Mississippi State coach Joe Moorhead as a potential candidate to be the next full-time head coach of the Scarlet Knights.

Moorhead was asked about the rumors during his Tuesday bye week press conference.

“I guess it’s getting towards that time of year,” Moorhead told reporters. “We ask our players to be focused on the task at hand and right now I’m focused on us getting better tomorrow, us doing a great job recruiting this weekend. And then doing what we need to do with the team next week to find a way to beat Tennessee.”

After giving that response, he was then asked if Rutgers representatives had contacted him.

“They have not,” Moorhead responded.

Moorhead is 49-20 overall as a head coach: 38-13 at Fordham (2012-15) and 11-7 at MSU (2018-present).
