Joel Klatt says Sun Belt teams’ upsets in Week 2 show why expanded CFP will mean more
Joel Klatt shared his thoughts on the Sun Belt and the expanded College Football Playoff on his podcast this afternoon.
“I am so pissed that the expanded playoff is not here,” he said. “Because those games and those upsets would have meant so much more.”
Klatt says the games would have meant more because they would have disrupted a clear path that many teams would have to the expanded College Football Playoff.
Sun Belt teams accounted for 3 huge upsets in Week 2. Appalachian State knocked off then-No. 6 Texas A&M. Marshall upset then-No. 8 Notre Dame. Georgia Southern also defeated Nebraska in Scott Frost’s final game as head coach.
“Two years from now, if the Sun Belt beast goes out and has a game like that, then guess what?” Klatt said. “They’re likely going to set themselves up in a position where they get one of those 6 automatic conference championship bids.”
While many have their doubts about the expanded College Football Playoff, Klatt believes it can be good for small-conference teams.
