John Rhys Plumlee, the former Ole Miss quarterback, has a new job.
This fall, Plumlee will be the starting QB for Gus Malzhan’s UCF Knights. The QB won the starting job after defeating backup Mikey Keene in the competition, and the former Auburn coach made the announcement on Sunday.
Plumlee was a key player at times for Ole Miss in recent years, and has plenty of speed that Malzahn can use in his offense. Plumlee got his start against California in 2019 after QB Matt Corral was injured. The QB was named SEC Freshman of the week during the season, and set Ole Miss records for rushing yards, rushing touchdowns and total touchdowns by a freshman and the most rushing yards in a season by a quarterback.
Excited to announce @PlumleeJohn as our starting quarterback! #ChargeOn

JRP is a dynamic runner, which set him apart in the battle against Mikey Keene. Keene started 10 games in place of Dillon Garbriel last season. Solid quarterback room at UCF. It will be interesting to see Gus Malzahn work with a mobile QB again in his offense.

Plumlee was named backup QB again in his sophomore season, but also took on the role of wide receiver. He finished the season with 65 passing yards with one touchdown pass, 94 rushing yards, and six receptions for 79 yards in six games. Plumlee was listed as a wide receiver when his transfer to UCF was announced back in January, but it appears he’s found a home to lead the Knights’ offense entering the season.
