With Tennessee’s season opener less than 2 weeks away, new head coach Josh Heupel still isn’t ready to name a starter at quarterback for the Sept. 2 matchup with Bowling Green.

Heupel met with the media on Monday and did confirm that Brian Maurer, who had been absent from practice for more than a week, will be leaving the program and searching for a new home via the NCAA transfer portal.

Still battling it out for the job are Michigan transfer Joe Milton III, Virginia Tech transfer Hendon Hooker, and sophomore Harrison Bailey, a former 4-star prospect and top-100 recruit nationally according to 247Sports.

Heupel made it clear on Monday that the competition between the 3 is ongoing and that “no decisions have been made.”

The new Vols coach, however, also added that he has been pleased with what he’s seen from the three signal callers who are battling for the job.

“Those guys have been great, continue to compete,” Heupel said, via 247Sports. “We’ll see where we’re at here at the end of this week.”
