Is there any doubt that Joshua Dobbs was the most important piece to Tennessee’s postseason puzzle? The sophomore has not only emerged as a starter, but a potential star heading into 2015.
Dobbs earned another notch in his proverbial belt with Friday’s TaxSlayer Bowl victory. The quarterback recorded 205 total yards (129 passing, 76 rushing) and three touchdowns (one passing, two rushing), guiding Tennessee to a 45-28 victory, its first bowl win since 2008.
Dobbs showed poise and efficiency, throwing for a 76.2 completion percentage on 16-of-21 passing. The Vols recorded a touchdown on their first five drives and scored on their first six of eight drives.
It was the latest example of why Dobbs’ legend has grown in the Volunteer State. But the former four-star prospect has taken a long road to becoming the Vols’ quarterback of the future.
Dobbs was one of the first prized recruits to commit to Butch Jones during first two months at Tennessee in 2013. The dual-threat passer entered his tenure in Knoxville with high expectations, but struggled in limited action as a true freshman.
In 2013, Dobbs started in the Vols’ final four games, finishing with a 1-3 record. As a sophomore, he was on pace to redshirt after being inactive in Tennessee’s first eight games. But after making an impressive debut against Alabama in Week 9, Dobbs lead Tennessee to a 4-1 record in its final five games, helping the team earn its first winning record since 2009.
In nine career starts, Dobbs has shown consistent improvement, which should continue in his junior season. The Alpharetta, Ga., native has the chance to be one of the SEC’s best quarterbacks.
Friday’s win showcased the speed and talent Tennessee has at its skill positions. If the Vols’ o-line can provide projection, Dobbs has the ability to throw downfield and excel as an elusive playmaker.
The sudden raised expectations for Dobbs are valid as the SEC lacks star power at quarterback — aside from Dak Prescott, who could declare for the NFL draft. The dual-threat quarterback has shined in Mike Bajakian’s read-option offense and is capable of leading Tennessee in its rebuilding process.
With an improved roster, the quarterback should see solid production as a junior. Dobbs should emerge as a star quarterback in the SEC in 2015 and could make the Vols a dark horse contender in the SEC East.
