JP Pegues after hitting game-winner for Furman: ‘I was born for those moments’
JP Pegues knew that he had just become a basketball hero. With just seconds left as No. 13 seeded Furman took on No. 4 seeded Virginia, Pegues drilled a 3-pointer for the 68-67 win, and first massive upset of the tournament.
With mere seconds left and the ball in Virginia hands, Cavaliers senior guard Kihei Clark committed an ill-timed turnover to give Pegues the ball. Pegues then sunk the three pointer from the outside, leaving just 2.4 seconds for Virginia to respond, which they were unable to do.
Catching up with the media after the game, Pegues pointed to his confidence as one reason the Paladins clenched the win, saying “I had full confidence. I missed all night. Credit to UVA defense, but winners make big shots, and I call myself a winner.”
Asked how he felt about the final shot as he let go of the ball, Pegues stated, “I had belief, full belief in the shot. I was missing all night, but that doesn’t matter. I want to be in those moments, I was born for those moments.”
