Kadarius Toney is in a tight race to make the Kansas City Chiefs’ 53-man roster ahead of the 2024 season, head coach Andy Reid said on Thursday night.

Toney had a significant role in the Chiefs’ offense for part of last season, but was inactive for their Super Bowl win over the San Francisco 49ers last season.

Turns out that might’ve been only the beginning of Toney’s time as a spectator. According to Reid, the former Florida star is ‘in a battle’ just to make the team’s final roster ahead of the season opener on Sept. 5 against the Baltimore Ravens.

“We went through last year with him, so we kind of know who he is,” Reid said. “He’s a talented kid. He’s in a battle to make the team and all that bit, but we’ve never questioned the talent there. Him staying healthy was the main thing.”

The Chiefs beefed up at wide receiver in the offseason, drafting Xavier Worthy out of Texas in the 1st round and signing veteran Marquise Brown, a former Oklahoma star, to a 1-year deal in March. That created a numbers crunch this season in KC’s wide receiver room, which could have Toney on the outside looking in.

Despite Toney finally posting his 1st positive yardage of the preseason with 2 catches for 26 yards in Thursday night’s preseason game against the Bears, and even with Brown likely to miss at least the season opener with a clavicle injury, it appears it will be an uphill battle for Toney to make the team.

Toney was a first-round pick by the New York Giants in the 2021 NFL Draft. In 3 NFL seasons, he’s caught 82 passes for 760 yards and 3 touchdowns.
