Kalen Deboer is preparing to enter the 2024 season in his first year as the head coach of the Alabama Crimson Tide, and one of the most intriguing players he’ll have in the fold is quarterback Jalen Milroe.
Milroe was shaky at some points early on in his time as the starter but quickly rebounded into a late Heisman Trophy candidate. In the midst of what may not be nearly as solid as an overall quarterback class in comparison to last year, some analysts predict Milroe could be one of the top passers in the nation.
Deboer has taken note of the work Milroe has put in during the offseason and has seen improvements. One of the most important of those is consistency, which is the most sought-after qualities at the position.
“He’s been consistent. And that’s what I think one of the biggest qualities you can have is consistency. Obviously, you want a consistently be at the highest level that you possibly can,” said DeBoer. “You want to walk on the field, and this is for any player, but I think this is something Jalen has done a better and better job of since we’ve gotten here, and it’s you know what you’re going to get when you get out there— whether it’s the attitude and the effort, the play on the field. There really haven’t been some crazy highs or crazy lows.”
Pure communication has also shone in Milroe.
“I think he’s just continuing to build, continuing to work with his guys. Whether it’s the offensive line and the communication and making sure he’s on the same page with protections, run checks or whatever it might be,” described DeBoer. “The receiving corps with the timing of routes. A lot of communication. I think he continued to grow and evolve as well.”
It will be interesting to see if Milroe can meet the lofty expectations while the Crimson Tide transition, but he’s made it clear he’s laid a solid foundation.
