Kevin Sumlin not pleased following Texas A&M’s close loss to Alabama: ‘There’s no moral victory’
It’s hard to accept moral victories as a head coach, but Kevin Sumlin’s Aggies fought to the bitter end on Saturday night.
Texas A&M fell to Alabama 27-19 with a couple of turnovers keeping it from pulling off the upset. One of the three was a costly interception from true freshman quarterback Kellen Mond. Other than the interception, Mond showed poise against an aggressive Alabama defense and made some spectacular plays.
The Aggies defense stood tall for most of the game, especially in the second half. While it wasn’t the outcome Sumlin wanted, fans should be happy with the effort the team showcased.
Conference play rolls on for the Aggies. Texas A&M travels to Florida next week to take on the Gators in The Swamp.
Here is what Sumlin had to say after the game to members of the media:
Kevin Sumlin: “Realistically the run defense was pretty consistent all night except for the big plays.”

Kevin Sumlin: “Wecan’t give things away. You’ve gotta give Alabama credit, because they were able to take advantage of that.” pic.twitter.com/YflDektCBH

Sumlin: “They don’t always do everything right, but you can’t question how hard they play. We learned a lot tonight that can help us.”

Kevin Sumlin: There’s no moral victory. When you play that hard and play that long, no one is happy.

We lost the game, but as a team, we’ve gotten better every week. – Texas A&M HC Kevin Sumlin

Sumlin: “Kellen is a young guy. There are some things he would like to do differently, but he has given us a chance in all these games.”
— TexAgs (@TexAgs) October 8, 2017
Kevin Sumlin on Kellen Mond: This is a learning experience for him. Certainly he wants to play better, and he’s shown that every week.

Sumlin: "Tyrel has been frustrated with his play of late. He has an ankle [injury] but in a game like this, he made a lot of plays."
— TexAgs (@TexAgs) October 8, 2017
Sumlin: “Kellen’s legs can keep plays alive. He needs to learn when to use them and when to not. That’s what separates you as a veteran QB."
