Kirby Smart and Georgia are preparing for an SEC East showdown this week against Missouri.
On the SEC coaches media teleconference, Smart was asked about the protocol for how Georgia handles the offense. Smart explained the trust level the coaching staff has in Beck to run the offense, and referred to latitude and autonomy.
“It depends on the game and the play call. There are some games that are his check, some plays are sideline check, some plays are automatically checked and it varies, to be honest with you,” Smart said. “When you say, how much latitude does he have, a lot of latitude some plays and he has no latitude some plays. Situation controls that, the point in the game controls that, I don’t think there’s a quarterback out there that doesn’t have some latitude. With our guys, we trust them, we allow them to do some things, but there’s a decision being made every play. It’s just whether we’re tagging it or whether the coordinators controlling it for him either way. But we have plays that are both.”
The Bulldogs are 8-0, and Beck is completing 73% of his passes for 2,462 yards, 14 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. He has also added 61 yards rushing, and 3 touchdowns on 32 carries.
Georgia hosts Missouri on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET on CBS.
