Kirby Smart isn’t a fan of the proposed early signing period

A week ago, the NCAA council announced a proposal to include two signing periods going forward — one in June and another in December. It would also enable college football programs to add another assistant coach — going from nine to 10.

Many coaches are in favor of this potential revelation. With the recruiting process being both bizarre and enigmatic, getting a high school prospect signed early would — in often times — be a big relief.

The respective school (in theory) wouldn’t have to worry about another program poaching an already ‘committed prospect.’

However, Georgia head coach Kirby Smart isn’t a big fan of this idea. When asked about an early signing period on Wednesday, he had this to say:

“I’m a big fan of if it’s not broke, don’t fix it. No one knows what will happen if we have one. Many ramifications that we won’t see coming. Players change their minds, coaches leaves… I think it’s already rushed. I’m not a fan of moving it up. Like anything, there’s good and bad to both. I don’t think it will be good for the kids.”

This is a fascinating take from the Bulldogs’ leader in command. Known as a fantastic recruiter, Smart was a big reason for why Alabama had a cupboard chock-full of elite athletes.

While this potential rule may ease the act of recruiting for some coaches, it appears as if Smart wants to keep it ‘old school.’
