After suffering an injury in fall camp, Lawson Luckie is on a positive road to recovery, Georgia head coach Kirby Smart said at his press conference Monday.
Smart said Luckie had to undergo tightrope surgery, but is already out of a boot and walking around with pressure on his ankle. He said that Luckie will be helping on special teams as he makes his way back to 100%.
In the meantime, Smart will be looking to his other tight ends to step up and replicate the talent that the 4-star freshman was looking to bring.
Smart has seen other young tight ends contributing already.
“In the time that he’s been gone, Oscar (Delp), Pearce (Spurlin) have both picked up the load and done a great job,” Smart said. “We’ve had other guys audition and move around at that position.”
Smart also mentioned that the Bulldogs can plan their offense accordingly without Luckie. If he does want to go to the 12, he has his options.
“It’s a position that, if you have the luxury of depth at receiver, you don’t have to play as much 12,” Smart said. “If you’ve got 12 personnel, you’d better have two viable backups there, and we’ve certainly worked towards that.”
