Kirk Herbstreit and the College GameDay crew are live from the Rose Bowl Saturday morning.

Yes, the crew discussed Alabama’s win over Cincinnati and Georgia’s win over Michigan, but the discussion later turned to why players are opting out of bowl games.

Herbstreit, David Pollack and Desmond Howard went back and forth about players not playing in “meaningless bowl games,” and Herbstreit had some strong language about the topic, saying this “era of player doesn’t love football.”

“What’s the difference as a player and saying these games are ‘meaningless?'” Herbstreit asked David Pollack, Howard and Rece Davis. “Des, we played in ‘meaning games.’ I just don’t understand that if you don’t make it to the Playoff, how is it meaningless to play football and compete?

“Isn’t that what we do as football players, we compete? I think this era of player doesn’t love football.”

As you’d imagine, Herbstreit’s comments are drawing reaction on both sides of the aisle. Herbie has always been a strong advocate for college football, and he has a very strong opinion on the matter.
