Kirk Herbstreit ranks college football’s top eight teams, makes Coach of the Year pick

Kirk Herbstreit’s impressed with what Jim McElwain’s done this season with such an inexperienced team at Florida.

McElwain’s led the Gators to a 9-1 start, clinching the SEC East two weeks ago with a win over Vanderbilt. Florida’s hoping to move up in Tuesday’s third College Football Playoff rankings and knows by winning out, a final four berth seems likely.

Herbstreit responded Tuesday to a fan’s question on Twitter asking his pick for national coach of the year:

McElwain’s the obvious front-runner for the SEC’s individual honor, but he’s up against several impressive coaches nationally. Tom Herman, in his first year at Houston, has helped the Cougars to an unbeaten start and Top 20 ranking.

Oklahoma State, under Mike Gundy, is now the Big 12 favorite after two momentum-building wins over TCU and Iowa State this month.
