Kirk Herbstreit and College GameDay traveled to Jackson State earlier this year to visit Deion Sanders’ Tigers football team, and he got the sense that Sanders may make a move at some point because of the buzz he brings and the success he’s had.
ESPN insider Pete Thamel reported Friday night that Sanders is preparing to take the Colorado job, and he’s been recruiting potential players in the transfer portal, as well as potential on-field and off-field staff members.
Prior to Saturday morning’s College GameDay, Herbstreit was asked on SportsCenter about Sanders potentially taking the Power 5 head coaching job at Colorado.
“We were down in Jackson about a month ago, and there was speculation because of the success that he’s had that there might be opportunities for him down the road whether this year or next year,” Herbstreit said. “It’s not shocking at all because of what he’s been able to do. The energy that he brings and the way he’s able to put staff together. I’m sure right now, according to Pete (Thamel), he’s putting a staff together to give him that opportunity.
“Man, overnight, Colorado goes from a brand that’s honestly been forgotten and not talked about — and seems like over a decade, to almost all of a sudden a lot of attention and a lot of buzz. A lot of people are curious to see if Deion is going to take this job and become the guy at Boulder and get them back on the map.
“We all applaud it, look forward to it and hope it really happens.”
The former MLB and NFL star is a combined 26-5 in 3 seasons at Jackson State. Sanders getting a head-coaching gig in a Power 5 Conference would certainly be entertaining.
