Kirk Herbstreit recalls Mike Leach’s impact, says he’ll be missed on many levels

The college football world remains in mourning after the passing of Mississippi State football coach Mike Leach.
The 61-year-old Leach died Monday night after suffering what has been reported to be a massive heart attack on Sunday afternoon.
In the aftermath of his death, college football fans and analysts have offered an outpouring of support for Leach’s family while also paying tribute to the man who was affectionately known as “The Pirate.”
Among those to offer his thoughts was ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit, who was quick to point out that while Leach was beloved for his quirky personality and incredible sense of humor that his influence on the game should not be forgotten.
“My first thoughts are, of course, with his wife and with his family,” Herbstreit said. “To hear the news, it’s just one of those things that’s tragic. … I spent numerous times and hours with him talking football and a lot of times it’s hard to talk football because he has such a fun personality, probably known as much for his quick one-liners as his Xs and Os. He brought so much to the game.
“Just an incredible character, a lot of fun. … Just a great personality for the game of college football but a very innovative teacher of the game and a guy that will be missed on many levels.”
