Kirk Herbstreit shares thoughts on thrilling final minutes of Sugar Bowl

Kirk Herbstreit got to witness the Sugar Bowl outside of the booth and wasn’t disappointed.
Herbstreit appeared on SportsCenter with Scott Van Pelt after the Sugar Bowl to break down the final drive. Texas tried to get the ball to Adonai Mitchell in the front corner of the end zone as the Longhorns tried to create a mismatch.
“I was sitting here probably like you and everybody else like, ‘Here goes Sark.’ You and I were saying look out for Mitchell down in that red zone area,” said Herbstreit. “He’s got such great length and they’re gonna try to find a matchup that they love.”
The longtime sportscaster was in the booth for a few Washington games in 2023. One thing that always stood out about the Huskies was the ability to continuously prove people wrong. Herbstreit even said that he called the national championship matchup.
“I’ve called 4 or 5 Washington games this year. I’ve watched this team be doubted and still deliver,” said Herbstreit. “I thought this morning on College GameDay this morning, I wasn’t able to pick the Michigan game because I was calling it, but I told everybody it would be a Michigan-Washington national championship.”
Herbstreit figured the game would be decided by which team’s quarterback had the ball on the final possession. The score was close to what he thought it would be, too. Now, Washington has the chance to take home the title.
“You have no idea how it’s gonna play out, but my Washington thought was which quarterback would have the ball last? Which quarterback would have a chance to win? I saw like a 38-35 type of game and it kinda played out that way. Quinn Ewers, Texas, and Sark deserve a lot of credit for the season they had and just coming up a little bit short,” said Herbstreit. “To me, it’s about celebrating what Washington was able to accomplish, the year they had. Doubted and questioned, it wasn’t always pretty, but give them credit man. They got to the semifinal. They got the win and now they’re heading to Houston for the national title.”
Michigan and Washington will play for the national championship on Monday at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.
