Lane Kiffin offers candid comments on QB battle: ‘It is challenging’

The Ole Miss offense has a chance to be one of the best offenses in all of college football this year. Running back Quinshon Judkins is 1 of the very best running backs in all of college football.

Last year, he had 27 runs of at least 15 yards, and he broke 76 missed tackles. A big reason why was he was running behind a great offensive line, and that unit figures to be just as good this season.

The returning offensive line played 87% of the snaps last year, and has more than 130 career starts between the unit. Despite all of that offensive potential, there is still one important position to figure out: the quarterback spot.

Last year’s starter Jaxson Dart and Oklahoma State transfer Spencer Sanders are in a fierce competition, and Kiffin said he still doesn’t know who will win the job.

“It sounds weird for me to say because I am the guy who should know, but I don’t know,” Kiffin said. “It is challenging, both guys do really good things and have played a lot. End of the year at USC, this is Jaxson’s 3rd year starting games, and Spencer has started as many as anybody in the country. It is challenging, but it is an awesome obstacle to have.”

Whoever is the starting quarterback will have plenty of help on offense, but where the defense is will play a huge role in the Rebel’s ultimate success.

“They are really coming together on defense,” Kiffin said. “Limiting explosive plays, which sometimes in camp was an issue. Defensively, we have so many new guys coming in. These new guys coming in have a lot of experience, and that’s helped out. I feel very good with the competition at a lot of the spots.”
