After having the luxury of Matt Corral over his first two seasons, Lane Kiffin is presiding over a major quarterback battle.

Incoming transfer Jaxson Dart from USC and incumbent Luke Altmyer, who got extensive run in the Sugar Bowl against Baylor after Corral’s injury.

During his press conference on Wednesday afternoon, Kiffin opened up about the quarterback competition, and he even predicted that would be the first question.

“We’re looking for the guy that leads the team and moves the team the best,” Kiffin said. “The things that go into that are timing, accuracy and decision making. That’s why we also chart things by production by series once we get into scrimmages … that’s the bottom line … taking care of the ball and scoring. I think competition is great for anybody, especially both of them being young. I think that makes you better no matter how old you are. It’s good to have around. These guys have to play really good around whoever it is. We’re replacing a veteran quarterback that played extremely well, at times put the offense, especially with injuries, on his shoulders and took himself to win the game. One of these guys isn’t going to fill that exactly yet, so it’s going to take other people around to help them.”

Near the end of the discussion, Kiffin said there is no timetable for a decision, and he related it to analytics. “The more information you have, the better you make a decision,” he said.

The Rebels open up the season at home on Sept. 3rd against Troy.
