Lee Corso was given the royal treatment by the good folks at South Carolina on Saturday morning in Columbia.

With ESPN’s College GameDay on the scene for the SEC showdown between the unranked Gamecocks and No. 16 LSU, the longtime college football analyst was given the key to the city. Corso just turned 89 last month, and he’s been doing the ESPN pregame show for a very long time — 1987, to be exact. Since 1993, the network has been broadcasting at the site of one of the day’s marquee matchups.

That big game on Saturday was LSU-South Carolina, and the city of Columbia figured it would roll out the red carpet for 1 of college football’s treasures.

Now, as far as being able to persuade Corso to pick the Gamecocks in his weekly “Headgear Pick,” that’s another story. Corso makes his big pick of the week on the show with his signature moment of putting on the giant headgear of the team he thinks will prevail that day.

On Saturday morning, that team wasn’t South Carolina, despite the love being shown to him by the city.

But Corso doesn’t always have to be right with his big pick, even if he was the 1st 2 weeks of the season when he correctly took Notre Dame to take down Texas A&M and Texas to do the same to Michigan. And so far on Saturday, South Carolina was proving Corso wrong, leading LSU in the 2nd quarter.
