Lee Corso retirement: College football fans share their favorite GameDay moments
Lee Corso suffered a stroke in 2009 that temporarily left him unable to speak. He took a break from ESPN’s College GameDay while he recovered, but wasn’t away from the set for too long. He returned to the show later that same season and has remained the same icon in broadcasting for nearly 2 decades since.
On Thursday, ESPN announced that Corso will soon call it a career. The Aug. 30 edition of College GameDay, which kicks off the 2025 football season, will be Corso’s final show before he officially retires.
“ESPN has been exceptionally generous to me, especially these past few years,” Corso said in a statement on Thursday. “They accommodated me and supported me, as did my colleagues in the early days of College GameDay. Special thanks to Kirk Herbstreit for his friendship and encouragement. And lest I forget, the fans … truly a blessing to share this with them. ESPN gave me this wonderful opportunity and provided me the support to ensure success. I am genuinely grateful.”
According to ESPN, Corso has gone 286-144 in his 430 selections across 38 years with GameDay. He had a perfect season in 1999 and picked 69 different teams all-time.
The iconic headgear picks have become famous — with Corso picking Ohio State, Alabama, LSU, and Florida more times than any other schools — but the indelible Corso moments haven’t just been confined to the end of the show.
In a video shared on social media, GameDay host Rece Davis praised Corso for always ensuring it was OK to have a laugh on GameDay.
