Before LSU and Texas A&M ever meet on the field this season, they’ll first have to meet in with attorneys to discuss the civil lawsuit between LSU and former defensive coordinator John Chavis.
According to Ross Dellenger of the Advocate, Les Miles, Kevin Sumlin, John Chavis as well as LSU athletic director Joe Alleva will all be deposed sometime in July. In addition to these key figures, LSU has issued a subpoena for Chavis’ agent Tony Agnone. The Tigers are reportedly attempting to gain access to “texts, emails, documents and other written communication exchanged” between Chavis and Agnone between Nov. 1, 2014 and Feb. 11, 2015.
The heart of the issue between LSU and Chavis exists on a disagreement surrounding when the defensive coordinator left the Tigers and officially began work for the Aggies. Chavis would not owe LSU any buyout if he left after Jan. 31, 2015, which Chavis claims to be the case. However recruiting photos were posted in January of 2015 with Chavis in A&M gear with recruits, which obviously lead the Tigers to assume Chavis was recruiting the prospects to the Aggies.
In addition to that disagreement, Chavis claims LSU owes him over $200,000 in unpaid vacation wages and academic performance bonuses as well as another $445,000 in penalty wages.
Nearly two years later and both sides continue to battle it out behind the scenes. Apparently divorces never end pretty in the world of SEC football.
