Les Miles’ No. 13-ranked LSU opened the season with a 21-19 victory over previously-ranked Mississippi State.
In what turned out to be the Tigers’ season opener, the team traveled to Starkville, Miss., built up an early 14-3 lead and withstood a late rally by Dak Prescott and Co. to move to 1-0 in the early season.
LSU’s defense registered three sacks of Prescott, two of which came in the first quarter. As the pressure began to lessen, though, Mississippi State and Prescott picked up steam.
Such has left Miles with a blueprint for his upcoming showdown with No. 18 Auburn, but the coach knows what’s at stake on Saturday.
“The young men went to Starkville, played hard, started fast, didn’t play perfectly, but played well,” Miles said Wednesday on his weekly radio show.
“Auburn is a ranked team and, frankly, a traditional rival. It’s a significant game in the SEC Western Division.”
Here are some other points Miles made during his radio show Wednesday:
- Freshman defensive end Isaiah Washington practiced.
- LSU feels better about its depth than other people seem to.
- Jalen Mills had a jersey on today, but there was no indication if he participated. Mills is trying to work his way back from a fractured leg.
- Wide receiver Jazz Ferguson could play on Saturday.
- William Clapp or Maea Teuhema will start at left guard.
- Team is prepared to deal with the heat this weekend. Weather.com forecasts it could reach 93 degrees in Baton Rouge on Saturday.
