Ed Orgeron is already paying dividends for LSU. On Wednesday, the Tigers new defensive line coach landed a big-time commitment from four-star prospect Tyler Shelvin (Northside High School, Lafayette, La.), one of the highest-rated defensive tackles in the class of 2017.
Shelvin was an attendee at LSU’s spring practice over the weekend and received his offer on Wednesday, according to multiple reports, and he accepted immediately. Shelvin attended LSU’s summer camp last year and dominated the field. Orgeron, Les Miles and Kevin Steele all spoke with Shelvin and helped earn his commitment, per 247sports.
The 6-foot-2, 310 pound Shelvin becomes the second player to commit to LSU for the 2017 class. The other is the top prospect in the country, outside linebacker Dylan Moses, a Baton Rouge native. Recruitment for Moses is expected to be intense over the next two years.
It’s very early, and early commitments don’t always stick, but the two elite defensive players pushed LSU to the top spot in the 247sports industry composite rankings for 2017.
