New England Patriots wide receiver Kayshon Boutte was last season’s No. 7 at LSU. Other past recipients include LSU standouts Patrick Peterson, Tyrann Mathieu, Leonard Fournette, DJ Chark Jr., and Grant Delpit.
“The No. 7 jersey tradition is unique and special to this program and worn by some of the greatest players to wear the purple and gold. We want to build upon that tradition and honor the best player on our team who is from the state of Louisiana,” LSU head coach Brian Kelly said. “Will Campbell has made such as impact on our team in such a short time and embodies the qualities to join the legacy of the players that have come before him.”
The 6-foot-6, 325-pound Campbell is a native of Monroe, Louisiana and played at Neville High School. Per NCAA rules, Campbell will wear the No. 7 as a patch on his No. 66 jerseys.
The reliable Campbell is coming off a sensational first season in Baton Rouge in which he was a Freshman All-America (Football Writers Association of America), First Team Freshman All-America (College Football News), Second Team All-SEC (Coaches), Freshman All-SEC (Coaches), SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week vs. Florida, and LSU Offensive Lineman of the Year.
Campbell and No. 5 LSU will begin the 2023 season with a primetime matchup vs. No. 8 Florida State in Orlando on Sept. 3 (7:30 p.m. EST/ABC).
