LSU CB Tre’Davious White: ‘I came back because of the opportunity to eat for free’
Players consider many factors when choosing either to stay in school or leave early for the NFL.
In the case of LSU cornerback Tre’Davious White, a rising senior, his stomach was part of his decision.
As reported by the Shreveport Times, White said at SEC Media Days that the chance to eat without paying a penny is valuable to him.
“I came back because of the opportunity to eat for free,” White told the Shreveport Times. “I’m serious. We get to eat for free.”
He’s right. The NCAA passed legislation in spring 2014 allowing for all-you-can-handle snacks and meals for student-athletes. As the Shreveport Times points out, there’s also about $300 a month available to student-athletes with the new cost of attendance rules.
“We’re taken care of here,” White told the newspaper. “Free food. We really don’t have to pay for a lot of stuff. I love that.”
Many projected White, who had 44 tackles and served as a punt returner last season, to be a first-round pick if he had made himself eligible for the NFL draft. He has a chance to become the first member of his family to graduate from college, so his education means a great deal to him.
But don’t underestimate the pull of free food.
