LSU sophomore defensive back Donte Jackson has been ruled academically ineligible to participate during spring practice and in track, according to a report from The Advocate’s Ross Dellenger.
As a result, the two-sport athlete will not be able to finish spring practice with the Tigers or take part in the outdoor track season. The source told Dellenger that Jackson’s ineligibility “wasn’t known until Monday night.”
“Jackson is considered one of three starting cornerbacks for LSU, secondary coach Corey Raymond said last week,” wrote Dellenger. “He’s been practicing with the starters during spring drills, running opposite Tre’Davious White at cornerback. He developed last season into LSU’s No. 3 cornerback, even starting the bowl game win over Texas Tech.
“Jackson’s role extends well beyond defense. He is expected to compete to return kicks and punts as well, and he plays in spot roles on LSU’s offense.”
The good news is that Jackson is expected to qualify over the summer and participate in preseason camp in August.
In 12 games as a true freshman in 2015, Jackson recorded 25 tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery.
