LSU’s defense has been outstanding in the red zone

When the LSU defense has its back against the wall, that’s when the Tigers show their claws.

In 2016, LSU has allowed only three red-zone touchdowns in 15 trips for opponents, a mark that leads the nation.

LB Kendell Beckwith told The Advocate that he and his defensive teammates pride themselves on that stat:

“It’s like your back is against the wall,” Beckwith said. “You don’t want to give up a touchdown. That’s the thing — not to give up a touchdown. … That’s our thing. It would be good to not give up field goals, but giving up a field goal is like winning for the defense.”

The biggest reason for the success? Beckwith says he and his fellow veterans study film more often now:

“We’re students of the game now,” Beckwith said. “Instead of just reading and reacting, we kind of have a feel for what the offense is going to do. We kind of know what’s coming. That really helps us out a lot. That comes from him in the film room.”

The Tigers host Southern Miss on Saturday night in Baton Rouge. The game starts at 6:30 p.m. Central time and can be seen on the SEC Network.
