After riding the historic Heisman campaign of Joe Burrow to a national title, No. 6 LSU enters its season opener on Saturday vs. Mississippi State (3:30 p.m. EST/CBS) with a new quarterback under center.

Redshirt junior Myles Brennan isn’t overwhelmed by filling in Burrow’s shoes. Instead, the 6-foot-4, 210-pound quarterback is relishing the opportunity to fulfill a dream and is confident he can keep the Tigers in contention for another special season.

In an interesting interview by LSU’s video department, Brennan discusses what it means to be the starting quarterback for a defending national champion. The appreciation is even stronger considering the obstacles presented by COVID-19.

“It’s exciting. I’ve waited a long time for this moment and here it is. I feel like this Saturday would’ve never come but as a team we’re all ready to go,” Brennan said. “We’re all excited and I’m excited to be able to go out there and do my thing.”

The season opener will be Brennan’s first collegiate start. In 17 games, Brennan has amassed 600 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 3 interceptions.

Brennan arrived at LSU as a consensus 4-star prospect and is the high school record holder in Mississippi for passing yards, passing touchdowns, and total offense. Brennan showed strong decision making in high school, as he never threw an interception prior to the state playoffs.

Brennan has made a concerted effort to set a positive example for his teammates during this unusual offseason.

“We’ve grown a lot. We’ve worked hard every single day before practice, after practice, Saturdays, Sundays. We’ve come in and we’ve made sure that we’re ready,” Brennan said. “It’s been fun to watch and see us go from the three practices we had in the spring to now ending fall camp getting ready to play our first game. It’s been really exciting.”

LSU fielded a star-studded roster last season with numerous draft picks. Brennan admires the groundwork laid by the previous roster and is thrilled to write a new chapter that Tiger fans can be proud of.

“Those guys, they did their thing and then went to the next level but now it’s our turn to write our own story. We’re excited to be able to do that,” Brennan said. “A lot of us have been waiting for our opportunity and it’s presented itself. We’re all going to take advantage of it.”
