Mac Jones has complete trust from Patriots: ‘There’s not a whole lot we’re holding back’

Mac Jones isn’t your typical NFL rookie quarterback. And that’s been made clear with how the New England Patriots are treating the former Alabama standout.
Although Jones is only 2 games into his professional career, he’s been the starter since the beginning of the regular season. And according to Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, Jones has nearly the whole offensive playbook at his disposal.
“I trust him completely,” McDaniels told reporters, including Zack Cox of NESN, on Tuesday. “… Believe me, there’s not a whole lot we’re holding back for him.”
That doesn’t mean Jones has necessarily used it all yet. He hasn’t made many deep passes through New England’s first 2 games, and his stats haven’t been huge (467 yards and 1 touchdown).
However, it may only be a matter of time before we start to see Jones air it out more.
“You want to be able to test those areas of the field as you move forward, but I also want him to make smart decisions, I want him to protect the football, and I want him to be aggressive when it’s time to be aggressive,” McDaniels said. “… “It’s not like he’s not [throwing downfield]. It’s just there’s certain times when it’s the right time to do it and certain times where it’s not. And I’ve got to continue to work hard myself to try to provide our offense with opportunities to do that if it presents itself.”
Jones is going to have plenty of opportunities to keep improving. His next chance will be Sunday, when the Patriots host the New Orleans Saints at 1 p.m. ET.
