For as much weight as NFL scouts put into the 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine, it’s worth noting that players very rarely have to run 40 yards at top speed.

Therefore, Alabama LB Mack Wilson had a great response when asked about his Pro Day 40 time on Tuesday, which was reportedly in the 4.65-second range.

Per AL.com, Wilson said he didn’t get into football as a kid to be a sprinter:

“Football is football,” Wilson said. “The 40-yard dash is the 40-yard dash. I didn’t play football all my life to be a track star or anything like that.”

That’s a great response, but Wilson will need to show lateral quickness and some solid strength to be a first-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.

Scouts have plenty of tape and info about Wilson now, so we’ll see where he ends up getting drafted next month.
