Marcus Freeman is sticking around at Notre Dame. Maria Taylor revealed on NBC’s Football Night in America that Freeman has agreed to a multi-year extension to remain the head coach of the Fighting Irish.
Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports reported details of Freeman’s extension on social media. Freeman has agreed to a 4-year extension, giving him a 6-year contract. With the extension comes more compensation. While the exact numbers have not been revealed, Freeman is set to be one of the highest-paid college football coaches in the country and is also getting a larger staff salary pool.
Freeman’s extension comes after he completed his third season as Notre Dame head coach. The 2024 campaign has been his best yet.
The Irish turned to Freeman as the program’s head coach after Brian Kelly’s departure for LSU in 2021. In 3 seasons under Freeman, the Irish have gone 30-8. Freeman also coached the Fiesta Bowl for the 2021 season, giving him a 30-9 record as a head coach.
Sunday’s news comes days ahead of the first College Football Playoff game of Freeman’s tenure. No. 7-seed Notre Dame is set to host 10-seed Indiana on Friday night in South Bend.
The Irish enter the CFP with an 11-1 record, the highest win total already in Freeman’s young tenure. After opening the season with an impressive road win at Texas A&M, Notre Dame stumbled in Week 2 against Northern Illinois. The Irish recovered with wins over ranked Louisville, Navy and Army teams. Last time out, ND defeated USC 49-35 at the Los Angeles Coliseum.
Notre Dame vs. Indiana is set for 8 p.m. ET, with the game airing on ABC and ESPN.
