Mark Stoops was less than enthused with his team’s Week 2 performance against South Carolina.

In case you missed it, the Gamecocks throttled the Wildcats 31-6 in Lexington. The Wildcats mustered just 183 total yards of offense and quarterback Brock Vandagriff had a nightmare game.

Vandagriff completed just 3 of 10 passes for 30 yards and an interception. Backup QB Gavin Wimsatt came in the game and didn’t fare much better, also competing 3 passes, for 14 yards and 1 INT.

However, Stoops defended Vandagriff after the game, saying the loss was “not all on Brock.”

“I think he’ll be fine. We have to play good around him. You’ve heard me say this, but it’s very, very true. He has to have some time [to throw the ball]. And we have to have a good plan for him. He’s playing a great defense,” said Stoops. “Brock is a tough, resilient guy … we have to play well around him and we’ve got to put him in a position to be successful.”

The Gamecock defense racked up 5 sacks and 11 tackles for loss, so Stoops has a point about not giving the QB enough time to make good throws.

“Brock, we saw him play a complete game 1 and we saw the way he’s capable of playing. We did not have a good game on Saturday. That’s not all on Brock,” Stoops declared. “We didn’t even give him a chance half the time, let’s be honest … So you can’t put that on him.”

Vandagriff did look better in Week 1, albeit against much worse competition in Southern Mississippi.

Things won’t be getting any easier for the Wildcats as the team is slated to host the No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs in Week 3.
