Mark Stoops did not sit idly by as John Calipari made a comment in the Bahamas over whether Kentucky is a football school or basketball school in light of the basketball practice facility.

“This is a basketball school. Alabama is a football school. So is Georgia. No disrespect to our football team. I hope they win 10 games and go to bowls. But this is a basketball school,” Calipari said, per Kyle Tucker of The Athletic, who pointed out that Calipari wants a practice facility as soon as possible.

Stoops quickly responded, “Basketball school? I thought we competed in the SEC?” and added the hashtag “4 straight postseason wins.”

Stoops certainly has a point, at least in recent years, as he just turned in a second 10-win season last year, as the Wildcats also had a 10-win campaign in 2018. Calipari, meanwhile, has had trouble in the postseason lately, and lost to St. Peter’s in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last season to finish with a 26-8 record. That followed a 9-16 record the previous season.

While UK has had more success historically in basketball, it’s undeniable that the football program has enjoyed more success in recent years.

This should be something to watch, but likely will be cleared up sooner rather than later.
