The Paul Finebaum Show is know for having some of the hottest takes around college football, but the show may have produced the spiciest take of recent memory for any sport Wednesday.
Marketing executive and guest Vince Thompson not only said that he thinks Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa will return for his senior year, but that Clemson signal caller Trevor Lawrence will sit out the 2020 season.
“What’s he got to gain by coming back?” Thompson said to Finebaum. “What’s the upside? Unless he gets a $100 million insurance policy. And by the way, he could sit out and begin his marketing campaign.”
Finebaum’s reaction was about the same as any fan’s would be — shock. Finebaum responded by saying “that’s an incredible statement.”
Should Lawrence sit out an entire season to avoid a major injury and then enter the 2020 NFL Draft, it would be unprecedented. Thompson admitted that it would set a new trend and then argued the issue of Lawrence or any player needing to sit out a year and wait to enter the NFL could be a debate for the U.S. Congress.
“How can you prevent a guy from earning a living based on his age if the NFL deems him ready to play? So, keep your eyes peeled for that one.”
It’s safe to say college football fans everywhere will definitely do that. While the SEC would love not to have to go up against Lawrence in next year’s College Football Playoff, if he really did sit out a full season, it would have ramifications for other players and teams throughout college football.
