Former Ole Miss quarterback Matt Corral’s preseason outing against the New England Patriots didn’t end the way he wanted it to.

His night was shortened by a left foot injury that kept him from playing in the final two series of the game. Corral had X-rays done after he left the field and when he emerged from the locker room, he was wearing a walking boot.

He finished the 20-10 loss going 9-of-15 passing for 58 yards without a touchdown. Corral showed some of the same flashes that attracted teams to him in the pre-draft process, but did look like a rookie at certain points in the showing.

That’s to be expected to an extent with any first-year player making the transition, though. Panthers head coach Matt Rhule was reflective of that when he spoke with reporters after the game.

“Those were invaluable reps for Matt,” Rhule said in a report from the team’s Augusta Stone. “There’s going to be a time when he has to lead a drive coming out of someone’s end zone, with the crowd being like that, getting guys in the huddle, making sure they have the snap count, and making sure we’re not false starting.”

The severity of the injury will have an impact on the quarterback situation in Carolina with Baker Mayfield expected to be named the Week 1 starter.
