The college football world was beside itself with the shocking news that LSU upset Florida, mostly because of a 57-yard field goal by Cade York, which followed an unbelievable penalty against Florida’s Marco Wilson
Wilson was flagged for an unsportsmanlike penalty after he threw an LSU player’s shoe 20 yards after a key third down stop. Florida then missed a field goal attempt at the buzzer as LSU held on 37-34.
Many media members focused on Florida’s likely missed opportunity in the College Football Playoff, barring an unlikely upset of Alabama.
They also mentioned the different in number of games between the SEC and other conferences like the Big Ten, or the canceled games by the ACC.
Here is a sampling of the media reaction:
For Florida, that game truly symbolizes the agony of de-feet

That was a devastating loss for Florida and i get that IF UF were to beat Alabama it could really muddle the playoff race BUT, i mean, I’m not really taking the possibility of Florida beating Alabama seriously.

Bigger news is Florida can play itself out of a New Year’s Six bid next week if Bama lays the smackdown.

Maybe this will be like the Egg Bowl dog-pee celebration, where one thrown shoe leads to 17 coaching changes

What if the SEC had canceled the final regular season games of its division champions like the ACC?
“That’s why you play the games,” one might say.

SEC football, man. SEC football.

While the way Florida lost was just inexplicable, give credit to LSU. I was convinced the Tigers were going to mail it in. They didn’t. They made the plays to win when given the opportunity.
Still think the Gators get in if they beat Alabama.

Worst day in Florida athletics in a long time. And what happened in The Swamp isn’t the worst thing that happened to the Gators today.

That LSU-UF result should get the attention of the A&M and Ohio State players, both of whom should be favored by double-digits next weekend.

Florida’s loss, by the way, is why total games played matters. Wacky games you have no business losing happen every full college football season. It’s also why the ACC protected Clemson and Notre Dame this week.
