The series lead in the Deep South’s oldest rivalry is on the line Saturday when Georgia plays at Auburn. Last season, the Bulldogs won 34-7 in Athens in a battle of top 15 teams.
The series, which began in 1892, is tied at 55-55-8.
At the beginning of the season, both Georgia and Auburn were considered two of the top teams in the SEC. Both teams have underachieved, though they won last week. Georgia beat Kentucky 27-3. Auburn beat then-No. 19 Texas A&M 26-10.
Let’s take a look at what the media is saying about the matchup.
1. Mark Richt is on the hot seat. Alex Scarborough of ESPN reported that Richt said his team can’t afford to go backward. The Bulldogs showed signs of life last week, dominating Kentucky, but they need to keep winning for Richt to return as coach.
2. On Georgia’s last trip to Auburn, a miracle won the game for the Tigers. Fox Sports relives the “prayer in Jordan-Hare,” while previewing this weekend’s game. It may not take a last minute ‘Hail Mary,’ but Saturday’s game has the potential to be just as close.
3. Georgia has yet to find a solution at QB. Richt said Greyson Lambert will start but other QBs will see the field as well. Auburn’s passing defense ranks 80th in the nation but has played well as of late.
4. Though both teams have been disappointing, the game remains relevant. Or at least the Florida-Times Union thinks so. Both teams are coming off big wins.
