Mike Elko is making a difference on the recruiting trail where it matters, in the state of Texas.

Glen West, the Assistant Executive Director of the Texas High School Coaches Association, said that Elko has changed the trajectory of their relationship. It sounds like Elko understands the importance of having a good relationship with high schools in the same state.

“Mike Elko has turned our relationship with Texas A&M around 180 degrees in the few weeks he’s been there,” West said, per TexAgs. “The thing was on its head, and he flipped it. He showed up to our office by himself – no driver, no entourage – shook our hands and said, ‘I’m Mike. I’m here to help’ It was refreshing to see and hear and something I really respected.”

Some of Texas A&M’s top verbal commits in the 2024 class are from the state of Texas. Terry Bussey is a 4-star wideout from Timpson. The Aggies also have verbal commitments from 4-star defensive lineman Dealyn Evans out of Longview and 4-star offensive tackle Blake Ivy from League City.

Elko is back for his 2nd stint in College Station and is already making quite the impression with the THSCA. Elko spent the last 2 seasons as the head coach of Duke.
