Mississippi State is working through a quarterback competition as fall camp ramps up.
Last season, the Bulldogs had the likes of KJ Costello as the starter early on. However, Will Rogers showed that he too can lead the team at times, coming in and showing he may have what it takes as a freshman.
Now as a sophomore, he’s looking to earn the starting job at camp.
While the job may look like its belongs to Rogers, coach Mike Leach said that it is still a toss up as of late.
“I think it’s an open deal,” Leach said. “I think Will and Chance are at the top, but it’s an open deal.”
The other quarterback mentioned is South Alabama transfer Chance Lovertich. Lovertich came in a couple of times last season as well, but not as frequently as Rogers. Lovertich finished the 2020 season with 619 passing yards as well as 5 touchdowns and 2 interceptions.
Rogers appeared in 9 games for the Bulldogs and passed for 1,976 yards with 11 touchdowns and 7 interceptions.
It will be interesting to see who comes out on top in Leach’s offense in year 2 at the helm. Leach gave some insight at how he will make this decision.
“It’s circumstantial, but we need to push it,” said Leach. “We’ve got quite a few more practices to do it, but there will come a time when we have to make a decision and split the reps different.”
