No. 8 LSU has climbed into the top 10 of the AP Poll and into the thick of the College Football Playoff picture.
Riding Heisman hopeful Leonard Fournette, LSU has defeated the likes of ranked Mississippi State and Auburn teams to move to 2-0 in SEC play. Not only is Fournette now full throttle into the national spotlight, the Tigers of Baton Rouge are very much in the discussion as a potential national championship contender.
But don’t tell that to coach Les Miles.
On his weekly radio show on Wednesday night, Miles said LSU “has not accomplished anything yet” but remains on track to “potentially accomplishing everything they’d like to if they stay the course.”
That course begins with a game against 3-0 Syracuse on Saturday in the Carrier Dome. Syracuse is off to its best start since 1991 and hosts LSU for the first time in school history.
When asked about the next game, Miles said: “We recognize that a 3-0 Syracuse team is in fact a great challenge.”
Here are some other points Miles made on Wednesday:
- On LSU wide receivers blocking for Fournette: “I want you to know something. Every one of the long runs that Leonard Fournette would have are all in some way, shape or form due to the fact that our wide receiving corps” got downfield and blocked well.”
- On Trey Quinn and the downfield passing game: “We’re trying to push the ball out there, and I think that you’ll find as we go on that Brandon Harris will continue to throw better and more often.”
- On being in a dome on Saturday, Miles said the key is making sure players are hydrated in a dry environment. He said it doesn’t change the game plan.
