Minnesota Vikings coach ‘didn’t think that was fair’ to have Kellen Mond be team’s No. 2 QB

While he did have some times of inconsistency, Kellen Mond did show flashes at Texas A&M and his final season with the Aggies back in 2020 was largely a positive one. That’s why he was selected by the Minnesota Vikings at 66th overall in the 2021 NFL Draft.
But things haven’t gone entirely the way Mond would have wanted them to in Minnesota, as he was waived by the team on Tuesday. Interestingly enough, the decision doesn’t seem to have come down to any regression on Mond’s end, though.
Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell had only positive things to say when he was recently asked about Mond and seemed to not think the situation in Minnesota was fair to the former Texas A&M quarterback.
“I think he’s got all the things you look for in an NFL quarterback,” O’Connell told reporters. “You can put a lot of pressure on a player if he’s not ready. In my personal opinion, I still think Kellen’s got tremendous upside but to ask him to be that No. 2 quarterback, being a snap away on a team we feel very strongly about competing. I didn’t think that was fair to Kellen.”
And this is far from the end of the road for Mond, who was recently claimed off of waivers by the Cleveland Browns. He’ll have a chance to continue developing there with a team that isn’t most stable at quarterback as things stand right now.
