There will be no football for Chauncey Rivers this fall.

Rivers, a junior college transfer who was a member of Mississippi State’s 2017 signing class, had an appeal to play this season denied by the NCAA. Coach Dan Mullen announced the news following the team’s 49-0 blanking of Charleston Southern on Saturday. Rivers’ appeal centered around his academic eligibility.

Because of the NCAA’s ruling, Mullen said Rivers would redshirt this season.

Rivers was the Bulldogs’ highest-ranked JUCO signee and was expected to be a key piece of the defensive line this fall. His career began at Georgia, where he was recruited by then-defensive coordinator Todd Grantham. But Rivers’ time at Georgia lasted just one season. In May 2016, Rivers was dismissed following his third marijuana arrest in seven months.

After spending last fall at East Mississippi Community College, he reunited with Grantham — now Mississippi State’s defensive coordinator — when he arrived in Starkville in January.
