Mississippi State HC Chris Jans says SEC teams playing ‘musical chairs’ for NCAA Tournament bids

Chris Jans has the Mississippi State Bulldogs looking like a team that is capable of making it to the NCAA Tournament. The SEC as a whole has been by far the best conference in all of college basketball. Auburn, Alabama and Florida are all currently ranked in the top 5 in the country, and there are legitimately 13 or 14 teams that could hear their name called on Selection Sunday.

With the brutal schedule that is the SEC, teams are moving up and down the conference standings each and every day. Jans said that teams in the conference are playing musical chairs when it comes to earning NCAA Tournament bids.

“I remember being in July on a recruiting tour with colleagues on the road going ‘look around the gym, tell me which program, which staff, doesn’t feel like they have a good enough roster to make the NCAA Tournament,” Jans said on The Paul Finebaum Show. “We couldn’t come up with any. That right there is like, okay it is going to be a game of musical chairs. We are all not going to get in, and I want a chair. There are going to be some really good teams that don’t make the tournament just because that is how good the league is.”

The Bulldogs are 19-7 this year, and have won 2 consecutive games against No. 19 Ole Miss and No. 7 Texas A&M by at least 10 points. Mississippi State will be back in action on Saturday as it travels to Norman to take on the Oklahoma Sooners. Tipoff for that game is for 1 p.m. ET and will be on the SEC Network.
