Mississippi State gave a tribute to its late head coach Mike Leach to start out the Bulldogs’ game in the ReliaQuest Bowl against Illinois on Monday.
The Bulldogs, who got the ball first in the game, lined up but took a delay of game penalty, which Illinois declined. The delay of game acted as an on-field moment of silent for the legendary coach.
Teams around the country have honored Leach during their bowl games, but Mississippi State has done the most because of the impact he had on the program.
Mississippi State is wearing helmets with pirate flags on them as a tribute to the man known as “the pirate.” The band also honored Leach by wearing black pins and playing the Pirates of the Caribbean theme song.
