Mississippi State has been at the center of a hot debate after the one-game suspension for five-star defensive end Jeffery Simmons was announced Thursday. On Friday, the school made headlines for a different reason.

Fellow presidents/chancellors elected Mississippi State president Mark E. Keenum as SEC president, which includes a two-year term. Keenum takes over for Vanderbilt chancellor Nicolas S. Zeppos.

Here’s the statement from Keenum:

“I am honored to be chosen to lead and to help direct policy in the most prestigious athletic conference in the nation. I appreciate the support of my colleagues in the conference during this exciting time in the history of the SEC. Because of my deep respect for the late Dr. Donald Zacharias, it is very meaningful to me to be the first MSU president to lead the SEC since his exemplary service in that same post more than 25 years ago.”

As SEC president, Keenum will have plenty to do. He’ll be in charge of a seven-member executive committee. The panel has the power to hear and decide appeals of disciplinary and enforcement matters, fill conference vacancies and approve or ratify conference contracts or agreements, among other things.

There will be a bunch on his plate, for sure.
