Mississippi State’s legendary band has several tributes in place for the late Mike Leach during the Bulldogs’ game against Illinois on Monday.

The band has honored Leach, who died of heart complications in December, with black ribbons on their uniforms, “in honor of our pirate.” The band also played the Pirates of the Caribbean theme song to honor “The Pirate.”

Leach garnished the nickname of “The Pirate” in the early years of his coaching career at Texas Tech. Leach had an affection for pirates and encouraged players to “swing your sword” and he was coined The Pirate.

Several teams have posted tributes for Leach and Mississippi State, and there were plenty in place for Monday’s game.

At Raymond James Stadium, for example, there was “MIKE” painted on the field, with a cowbell in place of the ‘i,’ and also a picture of Leach amid flowers on the pirate ship at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ stadium.
