NC State coach Dave Doeren announced on Tuesday morning that it will not have a spring game in 2025.
The Wolfpack are the latest program to cancel their public spring game, instead choosing to hold 15 private practices during the spring. They join Texas, USC, Nebraska, amongst others, who will not have a spring game in 2025.
Coaches are deciding to cancel their spring games for a multitude of reasons. For Texas, Steve Sarkisian said it was due to the added workload of extra CFP games his team has played in over the past 2 seasons. Nebraska coach Matt Rhule cited losing players to the transfer portal last spring after they played well in the Huskers’ spring game.
Doeren mentioned NC State’s 2 new coordinators when making his announcement.
“All practices this spring, obviously with 2 new coordinators, are gonna be closed to the public,” Doeren said. “Nothing will be televised … For obvious reasons, you don’t want your stuff out there if it doesn’t have to be.”
NC State promoted Kurt Roper to its offensive coordinator role this offseason. Roper previously served as the program’s QB coach. On the defensive side of the ball, NC State hired DJ Eliot to lead that unit. While he was most recently an assistant in the NFL, Eliot has previous experience as a DC at programs like Temple, Kansas, Colorado and Kentucky.
