NCAA home run race: SEC program leads all Division I teams as of Feb. 27

Balls have been flying out of the park to start the 2023 NCAA baseball season.

And like Tennessee’s aptitude for going yard in 2022, another SEC program has taken an early lead in the NCAA team home run race to start 2023. That team is No. 23 South Carolina, which has hit an astounding 26 home runs in just 8 games to start the year. For you math whizz’s at home, that’s over 3 per game (3.25).

Of those 26 home runs, 5 have come from Ethan Petry and 5 have come from Gavin Casas. Will McGinnis, Braylen Wimmer and Cole Messina each have 4 of their own.

Only Troy, as of Feb. 27, has more home runs per game than South Carolina, averaging 3.29 long bombs per contest.

South Carolina is confirmed fun

Look, the Gamecocks aren’t playing LSU, Stanford or Wake Forest here. That’s an important distinction to make. Regardless, this offensive explosion from South Carolina is a welcome sight for Gamecock fans and the game of college baseball.

South Carolina is also one of just a few teams that is still undefeated on the season. The Gamecocks swept UMass Lowell and Penn, earning midweek wins over Queens and Winthrop, with another midweek contest against NC A&T scheduled for Tuesday.

Look out for the Gamecocks come SEC play. South Carolina is beating teams by an average of just under 10 runs per game so far to start the year.
